For those of you who are wondering if japanese planes are suitable for Western hardwoods: here is an end grain shaving of sheoak taken with a sub $50 Kanna. Wood Janka hardness around 10k. Even has good edge retention. And this same cheap plane leaves glass smooth, finish ready surfaces on Rimu etc. I still prefer my Tsunesaburo, but this cheap Kanna works well above its price category.
